Job interviews can be quite stressful and it can be hard to feel confident enough to bring your best self to your interview and get that dream job. While having a good skincare routine to make yourself look and feel great is definitely important in building your confidence in preparation for your job interview, there are many other aspects, such as mentally preparing yourself, that are just as important.
I grabbed coffee with Colleen Coles, a Purpose Alignment Coach for those who deeply desire to turn their purpose into a career they love, and asked her advice on ways to mentally prepare yourself and feel more comfortable and confident at your job interview.
Sipping a foamy, delicious latte on a comfy couch at Shenandoah Joe’s, a local coffee shop, on Preston Avenue in Charlottesville, VA, we talked about what advice Colleen would give to those getting ready for a job interview so that they can feel more comfortable and confident. In a bright yellow sweater that perfectly matches her bright, positive, upbeat attitude, she had some great advice to give, coming from her experience in her current role as a Purpose Alignment Coach as well as her past experience interviewing for and getting her dream job.
Colleen emphasizes that visualization is key to bringing your best self to your job interview with confidence. Visualizing the feelings and emotions you want to feel at your dream job can help you feel those emotions while you’re there at the job interview. Thinking of how confident, accomplished, successful, etc. you would feel working that dream job. Then really feel those emotions. It’s really great to feel into how beneficial YOU’ll be to the team when they hire you. With thoughts and feelings like, “OMG, they will be sooooo lucky to have me! I am going to be so great at this job! They are so worthy or me being here!”. You’ll walk into your job interview feeling like you already have the job!
When Colleen was applying and getting ready to interview for a job as a Spanish teacher, a job that she really wanted and felt like it was the perfect fit for her at that time, she read a book called The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity by Edwene Gaines. This was a book that she found so fascinating, that instead of prepping for her job interview by brushing up on her Spanish speaking skills, she was reading this book. In the book there was a section about having a symbol of what you want and then expecting it to come to you. The author really wanted a white Cadillac for a long time. Eventually the money came to her so she could buy the exact white Cadilliac with custom white seats, just like Edwene always wanted. Colleen finished reading this section of the book the night before her job interview. On her way to her job interview for the Spanish teacher job, driving down McIntire Road, a slow moving car pulled out right in front of her. It was a white Cadillac. Colleen ended up driving behind it the entire way to the school where her job interview was at. While she had been worried that she would be late for the job interview, she actually ended up being an hour early because she had wrote down the wrong time, thinking it was an hour earlier than it actually was. She had plenty of time to mentally prepare herself for the job interview. She visualized how she would feel in this dream job teaching Spanish at this school, excited, confident, successful. Colleen remembers how in that interview thinking how she was making their day brighter and better just by being there and sharing her light, and how much MORE she would be able to do that when they hired her. She got the job!
She enjoyed teaching Spanish, one of the languages she speaks–she also knows American Sign language–but after a time, she felt it was time to find a new career, one in which she could help others to find a way to turn their purpose into a career that they love.
I hope you can apply Colleen’s advice and visualize yourself feeling those feelings of success. Visualization can really help you feel more confident and comfortable going into your job interview, so that you don’t let the stress overwhelm you and are able to bring your best self to that interview and land your dream job.
I’d love to hear from you! Have you interviewed for a job recently? How did you mentally prepare yourself to feel confident going into the job interview?
